There is no better way to spend a February night than with fellow book lovers.
Join
us Tuesday, February 7, beginning at 5:30 at Viewpoint with a glass of
wine and a general discussion of recommended books by staff and
attendees. We will then go to Tre Bicchieri for dinner and on to
Yes for a video author event with Amy Waldman. We will conclude around
8:30. Tickets are $35 available at Viewpoint, but if someone wants to
attend just the Yes event it is $5.
As part of our Book Lover's Night out this year we are having a video discussion at Yes Cinema with Amy Waldman, author of The Submission,
our favorite fiction book of 2011. The novel revolves around a group
who must choose a memorial after a terrorist attack similar to 9/11. In a
blind submission an American Muslim architect's design is chosen. The
selection causes a national uproar, and everyone involved must confront
their religious, political and personal reactions to this national
tragedy. Waldman does not choose sides, but looks at the varied
reactions to the memorial and it's designer with keen understanding.
Part
of the book deals with some very interesting discussions about secular
and religious architecture and the melding of the two.
We
are not alone in honoring this book as it has been voted Esquire's book
of the year, and one of the top ten novels of 2011 by NPR.
You don't have to read The Submission
prior to the event to enjoy the discussion, but a visit to the website
below will help you have some basic understanding of the book.
For those who do wish to read the book we are offering $5 off the list price. And don't forget you can purchase the ebook at http://www.viewpointbooks.com
